The text is a proposal to apply learning trajectories (also known as progression lines) in educational evaluation. The author embeds learning trajectories in the evolution of the theory of evaluation, showing them as an attempt to combine elements from the post-positivist and phenomenological approaches (in particular, constructivist and transformational evaluation). The learning trajectories are also part of the shift towards micro-evaluation, which follows attempts to move evaluation practices beyond the circle of professional evaluators. The rest of the text presents a review of the literature on the learning trajectories, including areas of application and effectiveness research. In the last section, the author proposes a simple model adapting the learning trajectories to the conceptualization of evaluation.

This article is the transcript of a talk given at the International Scientific Conference “Education in the face of contemporary challenges”. The author – as a practitioner working in the field of education for 19 years – addresses the issue of learning in the context of homeschooling, the development of 4K key competences and the formation of independent learning skills. Another area is looking at the implementation of the core curriculum and reading it in such a way that homeschooling is a creative adventure. In the lecture, the concrete examples and experiences developed throughout the almost 10 years of homeschooling were cited. The school stages covered were grades 1–3, grades 4–6 and grades 7–8 including high school. The conscious development of 4K cognitive competences can be a support for home education and a space to develop a young person prepared for the challenges of the modern world.

In the face of the challenges of the modern world, such as overstimulation and disinformation, which appear with excessive information consumption and omnipresent digitalization, education faces the difficult task of attracting and maintaining students’ attention. In response to the increasing problems, this article presents selected activation methods adapted to the needs of Generation Z and Generation Alpha, among others. The use of storytelling, manual tools and creative use of digital tools that can increase the engagement of students, support the development of critical thinking and train memory are discussed. The authors also share their experiences resulting from the use of selected tools in working with individual age groups.

The low rate of active citizenship concerns the whole country of Poland but it is especially seen on the fringes of small towns as that is exactly where it is supposed to be vital after the council reform of 1999. In the article, directed both to researchers and practitioners, existing barriers for active citizenship of towns inhabitants are analyzed. Taking local peculiarity under consideration, the author’s hometown Starachowice is the frame of reference. Also, the field research was conducted in that very place. The provided list of these barriers is not to be taken as an exhaustive directory but rather an attempt of capturing the complexity of a problem. With a proper diagnosis we will be able to design the services and products enabling the solutions for the communities.
