Multilevelness of personal development and autobiographical narratives

Autobiographical narrative is a means of continuous ordering, integrating and giving new meanings to life experiences. Analyses of autobiographical narratives of adults characterized by a high level of generativity (commitment to passing down values and supporting development of the next generation) – as described by E. Erikson – found differences between the structure and content of their stories and the ones created by less generative adults (McAdams, Diamond, Mansfield, de St. Aubin, 1997). One of the basic structural differences is that the former are dominated by redemption sequences (subjective negative-to-positive revaluation of situations), whereas the latter – by contamination sequences (positive-to-negative revaluation). In the context of the above-specifi ed fi ndings, the question arises whether the observations of the particular type of revaluation can be linked with the concept of multilevelness of personal development and how developmental transformations, connected with the extension of conscious actualization of individual freedom, are refl ected in the means of structuring self-narratives. Analyses of autobiographical narratives by individuals who reached a high level of personal development suggest possible links between the concept of multilevel personal development and the following characteristic features of self-narratives: fi nding coherence between many plots of a story, the prevalence of redemption imagery and integration of basic motifs contained in a life story.

Changes in body perception and evaluation among women from adolescence to adulthood

The inspiration for the discussion presented in the article were differences in body self-perception in women from adolescence to adulthood. The results of research conducted among a group of 476 women at the age between 13 and 50 revealed regularities and tendencies for developmental changes in female body perception. There were distinguished three age groups connected with the appearance of signifi cant changes in body perception ensuing from various social roles and developmental tasks that the fair sex representatives need to face during subsequent life stages. The first stage was observed in participants aged around 18, which sets the transition between adolescence and adulthood and at the same time begins the period with the most experienced satisfaction with one’s own appearance. Entering the next stage of body perception development at the age of 25, there appears the so-called middle life crisis which is another turning point not only in the area of gathering experiences, refl ections, and competencies of the gentle sex, but also in area of own body perception and evaluation.

Types of internal boundaries within families and social competence of adolescents

The objective of this study was to analyse family mechanisms of social competence of adolescent formation. According to Salvador Minuchin’s (1974) theory, it was assumed that inappropriate boundaries (rigid or diffuse) between parents and children make adolescents less competent in difficult social situations, while individuals from families with clear boundaries are more competent in social situations such as intimate contact, social exposition and assertiveness.
The modified versions of Analysis of Family Environmental Scale by M. Ryś (2004) and Social Competence Questionnaire by A. Matczak (2001) were used in the study. 345 adolescents from different types of families were examined. The results of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that there is a connection between family boundaries and interpersonal skills of adolescents.

Personality traits and adolescents’ decisions concerning education and career planning

One of the most signifi cant tasks confronting adolescents is planning future career in order to start an independent life (Kanfer et al., 2001). A number of studies show that it poses number of signifi cant problems (Super, 1963; Super, Savickas, Super, 1996; Webber, 1990; Borgen, Amundson, 2010). The aim of the present study was to defi ne decision-making mechanisms that have an impact on career planning by adolescents and the infl uence of their personality traits upon it. The NEO-FFI Inventory and a self-constructed questionnaire were administered to 116 students of the last year of a secondary school. The data indicate correlations between the choices concerning further studies and personality traits measured with NEO-FFI Inventory. The following traits proved to be signifi cant: neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness

The role of family and peers in the development of compulsive buying tendency among teenagers

Since the 1990s, one could observe a growing focus on children’s and teenagers’ consumption behavior, especially their influence on family decisions. Growing up in the consumption culture may lead to developing dysfunctional consumer behavior, e.g. compulsive buying. Compulsive buying is defined as chronic, pathological purchasing that becomes a response to negative events or feelings and ultimately results in harmful consequences. The purpose of the research was to establish the impact of family acquisition and expenditure patterns and susceptibility to peer influence on compulsive buying. The analysis has revealed that compulsive buying depends significantly on teens’ susceptibility to peer influence. The study has confi rmed the impact of incorrect family acquisition, expenditure pattern and gender.
