In this paper, the history and development of the town of Tychy’s green areas are presented in regard to urban planning and development. Two principal stages of the city’s origin together with the characteristics of the green area objects, as created during the mentioned period are discussed. Due to the scale of undertaking and coherency of planning during the implementation, special attention was paid to the period after 1950. It was the period when the General Plan originated – the plan concept, designed by Kazimierz Wejchert and Hanna Adamczewska-Wejchert, where the componential parts of green area system, as resulting from the adopted general compositional-functional assumptions, became one of the constituent elements of the city’s urban layout. Additionally, the process of implementation and the present status of the urban and local community parks as planned in the General Plan are presented here.

The park in Konarzewo has a long history, which dates back to the beginning of the 17th century. It was established as a result of Andrzej Radomickis decision to make Konarzewo his residence. Over the years the estate has been transformed from its original baroque form, through scenic style and further changes into its present form. It once was the residence of well-known Polish families from Greater Poland and after 1945 it was administrated by the State Agricultural Farm. The preserved historical materials and inventory records can be used for analyses and allowing for the reconstruction of the chronology of changes in the spatial arrangement of the park.

It is necessary today to completely re-examine the public parks use, development and design to meet the challenges and claims of the 21st century. With emphasis not just on their heritage and conservation but their potential as well, public parks could contribute not only to the social and recreational life of our urban areas, but also to the enhancement of environmental sustainability and the enrichment of the biodiversity of urban areas. A new design approach would be desirable for the management of our historical green spaces and to encourage a wider range of people to return to them. is paper comments on park use studies, contemporary park use investigations and student design works for parks in the future, using Paxton’s methods/approach/ideas for inspiration in the development of our historic city parks. And examines to what extent Paxton’s design ideas are applicable in the 21st century.

The adaptation of old walls to provide green spaces is characteristic of the 19th century and is related to the process of the expansion of towns with fortified walls. In those times, green spaces were commonly established in place of demolished fortifications, thus becoming an inseparable element of the urban structure of the towns. Points which require further study include their origins and transformations, their characteristic form resulting from their location within towns, composition and major functions. The evaluation of old walls used as green spaces using a spatial and functional approach, and also with reference to their historical and cultural aspects, makes it possible to define their place and role in shaping of the landscapes of towns in the 19th century.

This article presents the significance and the renewal capability of urban parks. Both the existing and planned parks may be included in the renewal area although they do not meet the criteria of space deprivation. Nevertheless, they may, to a significant extent, increase the opportunities of endogenous development of the neighbouring crisis areas if they are combined with the parks functionally and spatially. A park investment may be one of the key elements of improving the quality of local inhabitants’ life, but it may also have a strong symbolic impact in fighting with deprivation, answering the social and visual needs of an area.

The aim of this article is to analyse the effects that have been achieved during the design and implementation of the Public Park at the “Balaton” in Warsaw. This case is interesting due to the fact that the process of its design was based on the principles of public participation, with active involvement from professional designers, the local community and the authorities of the district. The large number of visitors to the park stands as a testament to the success of the project and the attractive nature of the area. This example is thus an interesting base for analysis. The article contains a thesis that, when properly carried out, public participation ceases to be a “rotten compromise” (in the context of aesthetics, function, etc.), but allows new physical and social values to be introduced into a space.

PiCUS Sonic Tomograph was used in the research which was based on the method of acoustic tomography, which uses the characteristics of a sound wave generated at the periphery of the trunk, providing information about the state of wood in the cross-section of the trunk. The state of health of 3 trees was rated as good, whereas inside 4 other trees inner cavities were found. It is expected that further development of damage will worsen the static condition of the trees and thus it will constitute a potential threat to the inhabitants of the city.
