In his short stories from De l’autre côté d’Alice, Georges-Olivier Châteaureynaud chooses three classics belonging to children’s literature in order to rewrite them for adults. First, the intertextual principle, which is constituted by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up and The Adventures of Pinocchio, can be easily identified through elements of the paratext. Then, the analysis of references to the models shows that the French writer modifies mainly themes, and theses transformations are of two types: diegetic (changes within protagonists and the chronotope) and pragmatic (changes in narrative sequences). The meeting of the past texts and the present ideas leads to an original rewriting example, demanding a ludic and hermeneutic reading.

The subject matter of this article will be an intertextual analysis of the pivotal ball scenes in the novels Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein by Marguerite Duras and La Princesse de Clèves by Madame de La Fayette. Despite the obvious differences in the poetics, creative visions, and styles of both writers, the reading of a 20th century literary work through the prism of the classic text exposes the stereotypes of love and a femme fatale also present in the novel by Duras. The ball from Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein, which draws on the ball from La Princesse de Clèves, illustrates the complex nature of love as an unhappy, mysterious emotion. The 17th century literary work inspired Duras to implicitly show passion as the quest of the heroine for the absolute as well as her total alienation.

The paper focuses on the image of Oriental women emerging from some travel writings from the second half of the 19th century. Influenced by the model of a sensual Oriental woman from One Thousand and One Nights and portraits of voluptuous odalisques; while in the Middle East, the travellers confront their dreamt image with the reality. Do they confirm it or challenge it? The texts of Nerval, Flaubert, Fromentin, Colet and Gasparin, who travelled to Egypt between 1843 and 1869, are analysed to answer this question and to see how the authors represent Oriental women.

In the discussions on the future of the novel at the end of the nineteenth century, the question of the adventure novel begins to emerge, notably thanks to Marcel Schwob and Camille Mauclair. It culminates with the study of Jacques Rivière, to which can be added the texts of Jacques Copeau and Albert Thibaudet. Rachilde, as critic of the Mercure de France, is not indifferent to this problem and formulates opinions which show the evolution of her aesthetic ideas towards the adventure novel. It seems interesting to compare these opinions with her novelistic practice which, precisely at this time, marks a significant turning point. The novels she published between 1904 and 1912: Le Dessous, Le Meneur de louves, Son Printemps, clearly differ from her previous works and confirm her interest in the new formula.

Fairy tales, issued from folklore, belong to a common heritage and that is why they undergo a constant transformation. In 2012, Amélie Nothomb draws the inspiration for her 21st novel Barbe bleue from this inexhaustible source. The paper discusses modifications introduced by the famous Belgian writer to Charles Perrault’s version of the fairy tale of Bluebeard observed in the chronotope and in the way characters are created, particularly in the aesthetic and spiritual proximity between the protagonist from Nothomb’s novel and its prototype.

The article deals with the notion of the factual writing represented in the novels La place et Une femme by Annie Ernaux. It contains an analysis of the impact of this kind of writing on the creation of the authentic image of the linguistic and extra linguistic reality which can be perceived by the reader. The article reveals the pragmatic role of such verbal means as familiar language and reference expressions which consists in transmission of the emotionality and increasing the trustful attitude of the reader to the text.
