In permanently introducing this new section to our periodical, we wish to call the reader’s attention to a unique approach we are consciously taking. In a desire to identify impending foci in our field, we have invited the youngest of our colleagues – MA and PhD candidates in social work – to act as our reviewers. Furthermore, considering the vast multitude of scholarly articles published annually, we have asked our students to primarily focus on this segment which is more likely to reflect the most recent findings. That said, we have not set a strict date range in the hope that our reviewers will freely discover or recover studies which might have been overlooked heretofore.

The social worker on the indefinite cultural margins

In the text at hand, I attempt to illustrate the relationship between the concept of human nature and culturally dominant strategies for constructing the “Other.” More to the point, I explore the resulting new challenges for a social worker – particularly in the context of overcoming “colloquial reason” by disclosing the actual structure underlying the social process. This, in fact, is the task of sociology within which social work has a significant role to play.

Personality profile of volunteers from Crisis Intervention Centre in Gdańsk

The aim of the presented study was to introduce personality profiles of the volunteers at the Crisis Intervention Centre in Gdańsk in order to subject them into three main groups and determine what are imperative characteristics for a volunteer to be accepted as a future worker. The sample consisted of 20 volunteers, the tool used in the research is NEO-FFI (NEO Five Factor Inventory) and Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire INTE. The article consists of the problematic aspects connected with idea of volunteering work, it was proven that volunteers can be characterized by higher scores in factor of conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness to experience, extraversion and lower scores of a neuroticism factor. Volunteers with higher scores in emotional intelligence, conscientiousness and extraversion succeed in their work and they are proposed further cooperation with Crisis Intervention Centre. Furthermore, it can be distinguished three different concentrations of volunteers profiles: (a) with higher scores in conscientiousness and agreeableness; (b) with higher scores in openess to experience and emotional intelligence; (c) with low scores in extravertic behaviors, but high in agreeableness and conscientiousness. Not many researches that examine the personality traits of volunteers working in the institution can be found therefore the findings of this research are expanding our understanding of this field.

The experience of parentification in families as a challenge for social work

Family is the natural environment of life and development for every human being. The family home shapes us and equips us for the long journey of a our further, independent living. All difficulties occurring in it have a significant impact on the functioning of the family environment and its individual members. This article addresses the issue of parentification, which could be an inspiration and challenge for social work. “Small heroes” taking up adult roles in their childhood, actions exceeding their own power, actions usually not ascribed to the role of a child, grow on “mature children”, who still carry on their shoulders burdens (usually emotional) of responsibility for family and parents. Reflections presented here concern the experience of parentification in narration of parentified children from adult perspective. It emphasizes importance of their own individual views and evaluation of these experiences and also places it in their biography.

Experiencing alcoholism in the family (in sociological terms)

In order for a social worker to understand individuals with alcohol use disorders, the physical, emotional, psychological, historical, and social contexts of those individuals must also be examined. One of the most powerful and influential social contexts across a person’s lifespan is the family system-including the family of origin and the various family systems and subsystems that operate at any point in time. The family systems and family members may have a role to play in an individual’s recovery from alcohol problems, or may interfere with the process. On the other hand, the alcohol problems of one family member may lead to or co-occur with a distortion of family process, thereby increasing the risk of family breakdown, dysfunction, violence, or other problems leading to social work intervention. The article attempts to show and interpret the subjective experiences of a person in whom the biography has been entered into an alcohol disease.

Social workers help the poor, the homeless, the disabled or the elderly. They recognize different faces of local, national or global social issues in their work. They have to know what are social issues and how they affect their clients. On the other side, sociologists study the range and depth of different social issues. The author reviews the development of the sociology of social problems in last 30 years in Poland. He shows the activities of the main scientific centers, their research profiles and the most distinguished scholars in the field. In conclusion, the author shows the strenghts and weaknesses of the sociology of social problems during last three decades.
