Wokół edukacji do pracy socjalnej – pomiędzy teorią a działaniem społecznym

In permanently introducing this new section to our periodical, we wish to call the reader’s attention to a unique approach we are consciously taking. In a desire to identify impending foci in our field, we have invited the youngest of our colleagues – MA and PhD candidates in social work – to act as our reviewers. Furthermore, considering the vast multitude of scholarly articles published annually, we have asked our students to primarily focus on this segment which is more likely to reflect the most recent findings. That said, we have not set a strict date range in the hope that our reviewers will freely discover or recover studies which might have been overlooked heretofore.

The author reviews his own experiences of writing an illness memoir, asking what makes such storytelling possible. How telling stories about suffering can precipitate healing is then considered. Finally, the argument pivots to health care research, asking what sort of research would be
consistent with the ideas about illness that have been expressed.

Social problems and social mobilization. Inspirations for social work in the context
of theories of social movements

The authors try to answer the basic question concerning the issue of usefulness of social movements in the area of social work as an academic discipline. Theories of social movements have used two types of theoretical achievements. On the one hand we have in mind three perspectives used in sociology to reconsider the nature of society, namely: the organism, the battle-field (in two forms: the conflict and the exchange) as well as the theater. Moreover, the fourth perspective might be added under the frame of social movements, namely: the protest. As a result, some mechanisms of generating of social problems might be perceived in this context. On the second hand, theories of social movements introduce the issues of various types of social mobilizations treated as mechanisms of social problems solutions.
The structure of article has been based on some key concepts, such as: society, social change, social problem, social movement and social mobilization. Such a conceptual and theoretical perspective has had a major task to enable various analyses in the area of social problems as well as social change and the role of social movements in this context. However, the main goal of the article has been mainly focused on the broadening of analytical frames that might be useful in the description and explanation of social problems without providing interested researchers in exact tools to analyze particular methods and ways of action in the area of social work.

Analysis of the Black Protests as a space for social work. Mass mobilisation of women from the perspective of feminist social work

The aim of the article is to look at the social mobilization of women in the Black Protests, which have been going on in Poland since 2016, as a space where women’s problems were articulated. The analysis of movement from the perspective of feminist social work makes it possible to capture experiences that interweave individual problems and structural limitations on many levels of social life: citizenship, law, labour market or health.

Family with autistic children – care and therapy

Nowadays autism is one of the most serious and common development disorders. The purpose of the work is to show how families with autistic children function in society. We are trying to explain that autism influences not only the affected individual, but also other people who are involved in his/her life. Autism influences a number of life aspects, and can determine capabilities and constraints of the affected person. Therefore, we would like to refer to the role of family and the potential impact on quality of the relationship between partners which have a child with ASD. Moreover, in the research, we are considering a gender dimension of care for children with special needs, support between partners of relationship and possible influence on the quality of raising up and growing up healthy peers, If they exist. The methodology used in my research includes in-depth interviews, as well as observations in accordance with the Grounded Theory.

Senior policy of the city of Krakow and the needs of beneficiaries

The article presents a description of seniors’ activity in Krakow in the light of social policy of ageing prepared by the city. The work focuses on comparing the prepared offer and verifying it with the beneficiaries expectations. Qualitative research was carried out to take a closer look at the senior needs. The issue of motivation to undertake classes was raised. Subcategories have been introduced, according to which seniors’ activity patterns can be defined. Factors that prevent or make it difficult to take up activities are also presented – among others, the problem of self-exclusion of seniors from social life and gender related barriers, which limit the participation level in programs addressed to seniors.

Powering it forward: Empowering in the process of assisting others

Homelessness is a social phenomenon which is now faced by residents of medium and large cities around the world. The issue of homelessness raises many questions related to the ways of preventing the situation of a lack of home, as well as creating constructive solutions that will allow the homeless to return to a dignified life in society. The considerations in this text on homelessness are an attempt to answer the following questions: How to create a help environment for people without a home wisely? What is the most important thing in helping? How can I not addict myself to the person I am helping? How to embrace the help of the whole person? In a word: how to create power when we give help? The answers to these and other questions were provided by practitioners who, through their activities in various assistance organizations in Krakow, work with homeless people on a daily basis.
