Authors of the project attempted to change the character of 29 Listopada Avenue so that it could be transformed from a barrier into a keystone integrating the space around it. It requires redesigning of not just the avenue itself, but also the grounds adjacent to it, so that 29 Listopada Avenue could become a focal point of the inhabitants’ activities. It was also decided to emphasise the rank resulting from the position that the avenue occupies in the space of Cracow, both historically and functionally. The potential of the place requires that the avenue should be given a representative function.

The paper presents results of the designing works focusing on the subject of redefinition of the current exit road from Cracow towards the North, to Warsaw and Kielce, into a municipal street, friendly for the city inhabitants, as well as of creation of living, active public spaces, creating the image of the city, offering a vast array of activities and pastimes for inhabitants of the nearby city districts. The main assumption of the designing works is the unification of the existing public spaces of the city: 29th Listopada Avenue with its immediate vicinity, within the scheme of one, continuous, and coherent area, providing its inhabitants with freedom and comfort of use of public spaces of different characters.

The in the staged approach restoration work of the Szczecin Old City (reflecting the periods of postwar history of Poland) with participation of researchers of Szczecin University of Technology (since 2009 The West Pomeranian University of Technology, Szczecin after the merge with University of Agriculture in Szczecin has taken place) has led to: in the 1950s the modern housing estates with services part in accordance with the old city plan; since 1989 the reconstruction of old city structure of the area of a former Slavic suburbium situated between the castle hill and the Odra waterfront, termed as the Szczecin Castle Grounds.

The most interesting for a real estate market researcher is influence of money on transformation of districts located outside of the city center. What is the reason of the transformation of these neglecteddistricts? Observations made in the NY area of Red Hook will help to understand the mechanisms behind the choice of location for living. During last 8 years, prices of apartments in Red Hook have risen several times. Development of city needs excess money that could be invested into the project that generate profit. This is the phenomenon of accumulating attractiveness of the place together with activation of the price „igniter”. Therefore, the theory that speculation is the main reason for the increase in property value seems reasonable and possible to prove.

The paper presents a diploma project of the recreational area of Nowy Sącz, situated at the confluence of the Dunajec and Nawojowska Kamienica rivers with the proposal of transforming the ground of the Koral Ice Cream Factory into a landscape-shaped pavilion of the Regional Promotion Center. The project was made by Iwona Niemiec as a master’s degree at the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology, under the direction of Anna Agata Kantarek and defended in the year 2015.

The aim of this study is to redefine the basic concepts of the urban composition theory and development of a design proposal for the Wisła river which is perceived as a functional and compositional barrier. In last three years, Bydgoszcz has opened itself on the University’s potential. Creativity of students of University of Technology and Life Sciences finds its release in executions dedicated to the city space, of which range and extent is being monitored by Civic Aesthetics Council by the City President. Cooperation, declared in the agreement between the City and the University, has given a rise to a new formula of studies, initiated new contacts and assignments. Apprenticeships, internships, careers in companies is an extra value for the graduates. Utilitarian didacticism accommodates intelligent tripartite cooperation.

Urban catalysis and urban acupuncture are known forms of activity conducive to the activation of selected fragments of cities. Among the examples we have as spectacular as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao or the transport system in Curitiba. There is also a smaller scale group that can activate fragments of small and medium-sized Polish cities. Contemporary trends in development of European cities are firmly bound with shaping of housing policy. One important factor in these actions is the awareness of the local authorities and citizens with regard to quality of the settlements, as well as their sustainable development. Cooperation between the authorities, investors and residents could improve the quality of the space, as well as lives of its inhabitants. The examples of new residential areas in Austria, discussed in this article, prove in how many different directions such actions are taken; how housing policy of Vienna functions with regard to shaping of the public space and how the implementation of Linz SolarCity reaches out to contemporary discussion about sustainable growth of cities.

The paper summarizes an innovative water permeable pavements (consist of natural aggregates or natural aggregates joined by epoxy resin) and the possibilities of their application to public parks laid out in the 19th century. They were characterized in the context of conservation rules related to protection of historical values of parks and connected with the process of their adaptation to the new functions resulted from the increase of social needs. The evaluation of innovative pavements includes functional, technical, economic, aesthetic and environmental aspects.

According to the international doctrinal documents of restoration, the best method of protecting castles is leaving them in permanent ruin. Really interesting and correct solution of that problem is infilling historic buildings with new elements. Nevertheless, we have to deal with activities, such as reconstruction, which are open to doubt and inconsistent with any doctrinal documents. In this article we attempted to describe various approaches of protection of monuments in nine examples of Polish castles.

The cooperation in Jurassic Salmon farm realization, the first in the world salmon fishery based on geothermal resources became an inspiration for future systems of food production deliberation. The project was realized basing on EU funds, research programme led by ZUT in Szczecin with procedural support of Karnice and Rewal communes. The investment powered by renewable energy, works basing on biosafety, industrial ecology rules and resources effectiveness is an example of 21st century bioculture. This one moved to urban areas may comply with broad sense to the city aquaculture or urban agriculture. This is the potential to be used by local self-governments, scientific communities and business and which can favour synergy effect on the way to regenerative design and positive development.

The problem of shaping public space is common topic of the many review, but the need to create such places in the countryside is rarely mentioned. The following work takes up the subject of public space on rural areas, more precisely in the area of the Jarocin Municipality in Podkarpackie Voivodeship. The methods leading to the shaping of such spaces are presented, as well as examples of where changes have contributed to the new definition of common areas. The analyzed area was identified for the types of public spaces in it, which allowed them to be assigned to selected categories (roads, streets, squares, natural landscapes, etc.). That allows to see trends in the development of public spaces.
