History

Prace Geograficzne is a research journal published by the Institute of Geography and Spatial Management at the Jagiellonian University. Prace GeograficzneCzasopismo Geograficzne and Przegląd Geograficzny are some of the oldest Polish geography journals.

The first issue of Prace Geograficzne was published under the name Papers of the Geography Institute of the Jagiellonian University in 1923. The purpose of the publication was described by Prof. Ludomir Sawicki in the preface to the first volume:

...…it is my intention to save these works from being forgotten, works that illustrate the scientific life of the Institute. By introducing young geographers to the world of the research literature, it is my hope that their noble sense of ambition and youthful fervor will not fade and they will devote themselves to pure research in order to join the thin ranks of academic geographers in Poland.".

The periodical was usually published as a monothematic yearbook prior to World War II. A total of 22 issues were published between 1923 and 1938.

The first postwar issue of Prace Geograficzne came out in 1960 as part of a series called the Research Papers of the Jagiellonian University. In 1998 the UJ Institute of Geography and Spatial Management became the publisher of Prace Geograficzne starting with issue No. 103.

Some of the postwar issues of Prace Geograficzne were also monothematic, including the following:

  • Polar Studies of the Jagiellonian University. Spitsbergen Expedition 1980-1982Polar Studies of the Jagiellonian University, vol. II, Spitsbergen Expedition 1983-1987, vols. 63 and 81, edited by Z. Czeppe,
  • Results of Studies of the Climatological Station of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, vol. 75, edited by M. Hess.
