Procedures for external peer review

Procedure description

All articles submitted to the Polska Myśl Pedagogiczna journal are subject to a strict review process.

The review of each article is carried out in two stages. First of all, the submitted article is checked by the editor-in-chief to ensure that the submitted paper is in line with the mission and objectives of the journal. The article is then submitted for a detailed double-blind review.

Generally speaking, the article review process consists of the following steps:

  1. The author sends the manuscript via the editorial panel to the Polska Myśl Pedagogiczna journal.
  2. The editor-in-chief or subject editor assesses the manuscript (initial review) in terms of the compatibility of the article content with the journal profile and then decides whether to send the paper for external review or to reject it.
  3. Reviewers assess the quality of the article (theoretical framework, methodology, data analysis method, interpretation of research results, linguistic correctness) according to the reviewers’ guide and review template (the template features a space for qualitative assessment – specific to the research area of the article) provided by the journal editors.
  4. After review, the reviewers’ recommendations are forwarded to the journal editor with a decision:
    • approval,
    • amendments required without re-review,
    • amendments required with re-review,
    • rejection of the article.
  5.  Based on the review, the editor prepares a decision and sends information on the status of the article to the corresponding author.
  6. If the article requires re-review, it is submitted for review again after revision.
  7. When an article receives the status of an approved article, the manuscript is forwarded to the production department – the technical editors.
  8. Once the editing work is completed by the Jagiellonian University Publishing House, the final version of the article is sent to the author for revision.

Details of the review process

A manuscript submitted to the journal is sent for external review (carried out by at least two reviewers) if it passes the initial (internal) review in the substantive and methodological areas. The editors of the Polska Myśl Pedagogiczna journal make every effort to ensure that the initial review process does not take longer than necessary. Typically, the initial review process takes up to 6 weeks.

Each article submitted is assessed in the following areas:

  •  compatibility of the manuscript with the objectives and profile of the journal;
  • originality of the study in the area of social sciences (with particular emphasis on education science);
  • appropriateness of the theories and research methodology applied in relation to the proposed subject matter;
  • coherence, logic and linguistic quality of the article.

The entire review procedure is divided into the following stages:

  1. The author submits the manuscript for review.
  2. The editor selects reviewers based on the consistency of the reviewers’ scientific output with the subject matter of the article. The review process is carried out as a double-blind review.
  3. The editor prepares a decision based on the review, which is then communicated to the corresponding author

All submitted papers that receive a favourable initial opinion from the editor-in-chief or subject editor are subjected to strict review by external reviewers. The external review is intended to help the journal editor make decisions, as well as to improve the quality of submitted manuscripts.

Each article goes through a double-blind peer-review process, which means that the authors do not know the identity of the reviewers and vice versa. At least two reviewers are assigned to each article. Typically, the review process takes no longer than eight weeks. The reviewers selected during the text review process may be changed due to circumstances beyond the control of the editors.

The selection of reviewers is determined by the scientific background of the reviewers in terms of consistency with the objectives and subject of the research described in the article. Reviewers need to have substantive and methodological knowledge of the subject matter of the article in order to assess its quality. Reviewers may not be associated with the same university as the authors of the paper.

Reviewers cannot have any conflict of interest with the authors of the manuscript. Conflict of interest is understood here as actions that distort the evaluation of the article and are related to the subject of the research or the source of funding for the research. In the event of a conflict of interest, the journal editors are notified and the reviewers are re-selected.

Where an invited reviewer has concerns about their substantive preparation for the review process or lacks the necessary time resources, they shall notify the journal editor immediately.

Reviews must be conducted in an objective manner. Personal opinions, unsupported by factual arguments or not based on the applicable rules of research methodology, are not acceptable. Reviewers should express their expert opinion in a clear and factual manner. Peer-reviewed articles constitute confidential material that cannot be shared with third parties by the reviewers.

Articles are submitted for the review process electronically. Submission of each article to the Polska Myśl Pedagogiczna journal is acknowledged by the journal’s secretary. The editor-in-chief may be assisted during the initial review of the article by members of the journal’s scientific advisory board and editorial team. If the manuscript has formal, linguistic or structural errors, the authors are informed that further work is required to improve the quality of the submitted article or the paper is rejected. The review process of an article is discontinued if modifications do not significantly improve the quality of the manuscript. If at the stage of the initial (internal) review a manuscript is consistent with the journal profile and meets the text quality requirements, the paper is sent for external review. Before sending the text for review, the technical editor (secretary) checks the structure of the article and anonymity of the manuscript. An article not containing the authors’ details is sent for external review.

Once the manuscript is submitted for review, each article is assessed by external experts. Typically, reviewers spend between two and eight weeks evaluating an article. Instructions on formal issues as well as deadlines related to the evaluation of the article are provided to the reviewer together with the article. On the basis of the reviewers’ opinions, the editor-in-chief makes a decision, which may be:

  • to accept the article without amendments,
  • to accept the article after necessary corrections,
  • to ask for the article to be resubmitted after the necessary corrections have been made,
  • or to reject the article.

The reviewers selected to assess the quality of a manuscript act independently of each other. The reviewers do not know the identity of the other reviewers. If the reviews of two reviewers are mutually exclusive, the editor will involve another reviewer in the article evaluation process. The editors are committed to ensuring that the quality of the reviews meets the highest professional standards. When there are doubts about the quality of article evaluation, additional experts are involved in the review process.

Once the review process has been completed, the author receives a message from the editors with information on the final decision. If the manuscript is approved, the paper is passed onto the technical/production department. E-mails with rejections, approvals or asking for resubmission after corrections are archived in the journal’s internal repository.

Once the review process and approval of the manuscript has been completed, the manuscript is technically formatted according to the journal’s template. The editing work carried out by the technical editor includes formatting the layout of the text, graphics, tables, linguistic correction, as well as checking the accuracy of literature references. Once the necessary editorial work is completed, the article is made available in PDF format and is also published on the journal’s website (first view). Each article is also reviewed in terms of correct technical editing by the journal editor. Once completed, all accepted texts in an issue of the journal are made available via open access on the journal’s website.
