The paper deals with the concept of didactic approach to German Syntax from the point of view of students whose mother tongue is not German language. There exist many Grammars of German as foreign language (cf. Helbig/Buscha 2001). Nevertheless even in higher education of foreign students arise a lot of syntactic problems which need special treatment and specific explanation due to the lack of competence in German. Such items are for instance the pronoun es in different syntactic functions, the use of prepositions, the difference between verbal and nominal valency, the use of definite, indefinite, and zero article, verbs with double object compliments, and trends in everyday use of language.

This article reflects on different approaches to multimodal communication in text linguistics. For some time text linguistics deals with multimodal texts, however, the communicative and functional complexity of language-image-texts could give a reason to establish a new discipline – image linguistics, which is based on texts linguistics and develops already existing text theory and analytical methods. Nevertheless, within this article I propose a compromise and vote for developing of multimodal text linguistics.

The paper presents the research paradigm of paratext analysis. It demonstrates that with its help the book-like form of presenting literary texts will receive special attention. Paratext analysis generates new questions in cultural and media history of romanticism, but also important philological questions can be continued.

August (2012) was the last, posthumous edition of the literary work of Christa Wolf. In the context of this prosaic text, in which, as Christa Wolf wrote in the letter form-dedicated to her husband, there were many recollections; there was an attempt to analyze the prosaic memory of Christa Wolf (Nachdenken über Christa T., Kindheitsmuster, August). By defining the poetry of reminiscence of Wolf’s works, the author of the article has focused on Wolf’s essay – Lesen und Schreiben – it was a central piece in Christa Wolf’s work.

The phenomenon of intertextuality is so old as the literature, but the term was coined by Julia Kristeva in the 1960s. Vincent Leitsch expressed it 1983 in a such way: “The text is not an autonomous object, but a set of relations with other texts”. The purpose of my paper was to comparise Thomas Mann’s brillant debut as a novelist, Buddenbroks (1901), with the stream of realistic Norwegian novels of the 1880s. Especially there is a great influence of two fiction writers of the Golden Age of Norwegian literature in the second part of XIXth century, Alexander Kielland and Jonas Lie, on this novel. At the beginning of my paper were quoted the statements on this subject by Thomas Mann himself. Than the essay takes up the problem of intertextual links between the Buddenbrooks and some novels by Kielland and Lie on the level oft the plot, characters, names and lingual pronouncements in the texts. At last I researched the differences in the function of the common elements by the Norwegian writers and the German novelist.

In his essay “On gesture” Giorgio Agamben argues that western society has lost its natural sense of gestures at the end of the 19th Century. This article examines the development of gestures from the 18th century onwards arguing that instead of a loss of the “natural gesture” one should consider the increasing interest in gestures in the 18th century already as an answer to the the threatening loss of the idea of the natural in modern society. Analyzing Rousseau, Kleist and Hofmannsthal the article wants to demonstrate how gestures always have servered to at once elaborate and blur the borders between the natural and the artificial.

The aim of the article is to analyze Birgit Vanderbeke‘s and Bastienne Voss‘ writings, focusing on family as a social space characterized by violence. The male (the grandfather or the father) exists in this context as a figure influencing the proper functioning of family life destructively. Orders, bans, threats, as well as physical and psychical violence act as instruments of exercising power, whose main purpose is to have others subordinate to the values, views and norms of conduct determined by the head of the family.

In recent years, a canon of modern German literature has been widely discussed, particularly in the context of educational reforms. The discourse has taken place both in the public sphere of (print) media and within the fields of literary studies as well as teaching mehodology, with obvious interferences. Positions reach from demands to foster and revise a canon to its complete rejection as an educated middle-class phenomenon. While literary studies have developed a nomenclatura of the canon concept and reflected on criteria for its compilation, teaching methodology recommends – in view of competence-oriented literature courses – to focus on the teaching of a basic knowledge of literary history, which seems to make the consideration of a canon indispensible in a certain framework.
