Information for Authors

Submission preparation checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1.  The submition file has been saved in Microsoft Word (as a “DOC” or “DOCX” file) or in RTF format.

  2.  The text meets the stylistic and bibliographic requirements described in the Guidelines for Authors. Where possible, ISBN, DOI and URLs for bibliographic references are included.

  3. If applicable, sources of financing of the work have been listed in the submitted publication (information on this fact should be included at the end of the article, before the bibliography).

  4. If the articles are accompanied by illustrations (photographs or graphics),
    • they should be numbered sequentially in the text as “Fig. 1”, “Fig. 2”, etc.;

    • it should be clearly marked where the figure is to be inserted in the text – a precise description of the picture should be provided in this place, that is the figure number; its title; the author of the figure; hyperlink (if exists); copyrights for distribution of the figure, etc.;

    • the figure should not be included in the text;

    •  numbered list of illustrations should be placed at the end of the article (after the bibliography);

    • the illustrations should meet the following technical requirements;

    • every figure should be a separate file (JPG, TIF or EPS); the names of the files should follow the numbering in the list of figures;

    • resolution (if possible) of min. 300 dpi.

  5. A self-made table (in a text editor) should be inserted directly into the text and precisely described with a number (e.g. “Tab. 1”, “Tab. 2”, etc.), a title, etc. When tables from other publications are used in the text, they are considered illustrations (see section 5.).

  7. The author agrees with the terms and conditions of the license agreement with the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (cf. Copyright License Agreement Form).

    • the author declares that the submitted publication has not been previously published and is not under consideration for publication in another publishing house (or an explanation has been provided in comments sent to the Editorial Team to the e-mail address shs@pau.krakow.pl);

    • the author states that the publication includes no “ghostwriting”, “guest-authorship” or “honorary authorship” phenomena, and all the sources of information used during the preparation of this publication are cited reliably in the submitted publication (cf. Publication ethics and malpractice statement);

    • the author gives information about the possible existence of conflict of interests (cf. Publication ethics and malpractice statement);

    • in the case of collective work, the author submitting the article for publication also completes a statement in which the contribution of the work of individual co-authors is specified and the content of the work is known to all its co-authors and they consent to its publication.

Author Guidelines

The criteria for accepting and publishing manuscripts in the journal

  1. Thematic scope and the sections of the journal
    Manuscripts submitted for publication must correspond to the character of the journal (see bookmark: Focus and Scope).

  2. Submitting manuscripts for publication, and technical requirements
    • The manuscript should be sent to: shs@pau.krakow.pl or should be submitted directly via Submission Panel in OJS.

    • It should be saved in the MS Word format (the DOC or DOCX format) or RTF and meet the requirements of the journal (see below: 6. Manuscript template and text formatting – guidelines).

    • In addition, a statement should be enclosed that the manuscript has not been previously published or accepted for publication in another publishing house; in the case of co-authorship, it is also required to include the relevant information about the contribution of each of the authors – see: Author Declaration Form.

  3. Review principles and the decision to publish
    • Submitted manuscripts are subject to certain rules of peer review that determine the final acceptance or rejection of the manuscripts for publication (see bookmark: Peer Review Process).

  4. Proofreading
    • The Editorial Team reserves the right to make linguistic and editorial changes in the texts accepted for publication. Before publication, the Author (or the Co-author who is the contact person) will receive the text electronically (or exceptionally a hard copy) for proofreading. The amendments made by the Author (or the appointed Co-author) should be clearly marked in the text. The proofreading should be finished until the deadline specified by the Editorial Team. Failing to submit the text after proofreading to the deadline is tantamount to accepting the text for publication in the version provided by the Editorial Team.

  5.  License agreement
    • The authors of manuscripts accepted for print sign a copyright license (see bookmark: Copyright License Form).

  6. Manuscript template and text formatting – guidelines
    • In order to minimize authors time devoted to the preparation of manuscripts that will not be finally accepted for publication in the journal, two stages of the manuscript evaluation are introduced: preliminary and proper.

    • At the preliminary stage, it is acceptable that the formatting of bibliographies and footnotes, which take up the most time for authors, should be prepared in any bibliographic style.

    • Then the editors decide whether the text is rejected or submitted for substantive review (proper evaluation).

    • After receiving positive reviews, authors are obliged to format the manuscript in accordance with the formatting rules adopted in the journal.

FirstView articles

Completed articles, i.e. articles after final revisions, queued for assignment to the upcoming journal volume can be distributed online prior to being included in the upcoming volume (in print and electronic versions).

Such forthcoming articles receive a DOI (Digital Object Identifier); the final page numbering of such articles is set in the journal volume; after the publication of the journal volume, the CrossMark service will make sure the files are replaced with their final versions.

The correct way to cite such an article is to use its title, the term “forthcoming”, and DOI:
Last Name, First Name(s) year: Article title. Studia Historiae Scientiarum (forthcoming). DOI: 10.4467/2543702XSHS.NN.NNN.NNNNN.

Where NN.NNN.NNNNN stands for specific digits 0-9.

No publishing fees

Publishing in the journal is free of charge (no submission or article processing charges). The only exception to this rule is if the author, authorized to a one-time proofreading, introduced changes that exceed 5% of the volume of the work. In such a situation the Publisher can request a return of the additional costs incurred.
