Abstract

Gender stereotypes in kindergarden children

The aim of the research was to investigate the understanding of gender stereotypes among children aged 5–7. The questionnaire developed by Szmigielska (2009) was administered to thirty girls and twenty nine boys. It contains descriptions of gender-related psychological characteristics, everyday activities, professions, objects, and appearance. The results demonstrate that gender stereotypes shared by children concern mainly activities connected with a gender role. In the case of other tested variables, they were not regarded by children as gender-specific. The understanding of gender stereotypes among girls and boys did not exhibit any significant differences.
