https://doi.org/10.4467/16891864PC.23.005.17969On the basis of studies by literary historians (especially the monumental Polish Literature and Theatre in the Years of World War II) and memoirs of initiators, creators and recipients of translations in the years 1939–1945, I present examples of translators who died during the war and those who managed to survive and work. I show the place of translations in the underground publishing movement and theatre; I discuss different ways translations made before the war as well as new ones, undertaken within structures such as the Secret Theatre Council or on private initiative, were present in occupational cultural life.

Marzena Chrobak, Associate Professor at the Institute of Romance Studies, Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Her research interests are centred on French and Spanish philology, history of literature, translation studies. She has published three books on translation: Optymizm Kandyda oraz inne problemy oświeconych tłumaczy [Candide’s optimism and other problems of the enlightened translators], WUJ, Kraków 2009, Między światami. Tłumacz ustny oraz komunikacja międzykulturowa w literaturze odkrycia i konkwisty Ameryki [Between worlds. The interpreter and intercultural communication in the literature of the discovery and conquest of America], WUJ, Kraków 2012, and Nazwy własne w przekładzie. Teoria i praktyka [Proper Names in Translation. Theory and Practise], Universitas, Kraków 2024, and over 40 articles and chapters. She has translated 20 novels (Eduardo Mendoza, Mario Vargas Llosa) and 2 films (Pedro Almodóvar) from Spanish into Polish.
