Abstrakt

From the 15th century onwards, the Portuguese language became a colonial instrument. In non-European territories, the Portuguese imposed themselves on different cultures, but they also welcomed new words, alongside the discovery of hitherto unknown realities. Bluteau’s Vocabulario offers a large amount of information about Portuguese contact with indigenous languages, as in the case of Brazil. The expression “Brazilian word” is used by Bluteau in entries that refer to Brazilian pecificities, generally autochthonous plants and animals, as well as some artefacts. Bluteau’s lexicographical writing reflects both the vision of the world of his time and the lexicographer’s personal point of view, illustrated by information that is sometimes well-founded and sometimes quite fanciful.

Esperança Cardeira is an associate professor of Linguistics at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon (FLUL) and a researcher at CLUL – Center of Linguistics at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. She holds a BA’s in Modern Languages and Literatures, a MA in Portuguese Linguistics, and a PhD in Historical Linguistics from the University of Lisbon. She is specialised in Historical Linguistics; her main research interests also include Etymology, Lexicography, Linguistic Contacts, Onomastics, Textual Criticism, Philology and Digital Humanities. She has authored, co-authored and edited several books and papers, namely: Entre o Português Antigo e o Português Clássico (2005), O Essencial sobre a história do Português (2006), Norma e Variação (2007), Colour and Colour Naming: Crosslinguistic Approaches (2016), Breve storia della lingua portoghese (2019), Gramática histórica do Português Europeu (2021).

Alina Villalva earned her PhD in Linguistics from the University of Lisbon (Portugal), with a dissertation titled Estruturas Morfológicas. Unidades e Hierarquias nas Palavras do Português. She is a researcher specializing in Theoretical and Experimental Morphology, focusing on morphological structures, inflection, and word formation, as well as Lexical Studies, including lexical theory, historical lexicology, and lexical processing. In 2019, she founded The Word Lab, a virtual platform aimed at fostering collaboration among researchers in word processing studies. Since 1984, she has been a professor at the Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon (FLUL), closely affiliated with the Department of General and Romance Linguistics. Additionally, she has been a researcher at the Center of Linguistics at the University of Lisbon (CLUL) since 2008, where she is part of the Psycholinguistics Laboratory team.

Laura do Carmo is a researcher at the Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She holds a PhD in linguistics from the Rio de Janeiro State University, Brazil. She is specialised in Metalexicography and Philology and she develops studies on the Brazilian lexicon in Portuguese language dictionaries, coordinates the editing of texts by jurist Rui Barbosa and has dedicated herself to developing a collection of grammars and dictionaries in partnership with the National Library in Rio de Janeiro. She is one of the organizers of the publications História Social da Língua Nacional (Social History of the National Language).
