Abstract

Accounts of San Francisco Policemen relating to Chinatown as a Source for a History of American Mentalité in the Nineteenth Century

This article focusses on the testimonies of policemen in nineteenth‑century San Francisco, made before a special commission examining the influence of Chinese migrants on the United States. Here a central role was played by the issue of the conditions obtaining in the district inhabited by the Chinese. Flash points in the relations between Americans and Chinese immigrants are analyzed: the sanitary and housing situations, and prostitution. The testimonies of police officers are presented against a background of other events and historical processes; thus, the article also becomes an attempt to describe the mentalité of the inhabitants of the United States in the nineteenth century.  This makes it possible to reflect on the phenomena discussed from the perspective of the theories advanced by, among others, Bernhard Waldenfels, who explores issues connected with otherness, and Homi K. Bhabha, who deals with the relation between the sphere of Western civilization and representatives of Asia, Africa, and other parts of the world. The very idea of Chinatown is discussed – both as a physical space and as a mental construct.
