Niniejszy esej traktuje o przyczynowej teorii odniesienia Michaela Devitta. Głównym powodem poświęcenia temu tematowi całego eseju jest słaba znajomość tej teorii w Polsce, mimo jej dużego znaczenia dla rozwoju teorii odnoszenia dla nazw własnych. Książka Devitta to jedna z najważniejszych pozycji podejmujących problemy przyczynowych teorii odnoszenia oraz próby rozwiązań owych problemów.
