Description, mission and objectives

Desciription

The Archeion is the oldest scholarly journal devoted to archival matters published in Poland. It was founded in 1926 by Professor Stanisław Ptaszycki, one of the most eminent Polish historians of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and General Director of the State Archives at the time. The first issue appeared in print in 1927. By 1939, 16 volumes of the journal had been published.

Publication of the Archeion was resumed in 1948, under Witold Suchodolski and Prof. Piotr Bańkowski. At that time, a combined volume 17-18 was printed. After World War II, the journal has been published by the Head Office of the State Archives from 1951 onwards, with varying frequency, mostly as a semi-annual. Starting from Volume 112 (for 2011), the tradition of annual publication was resumed.

The Archeion publishes original works in the field of archival theory and practice as well as records management. The papers represent the results of theoretical and empirical research in the diverse area of documentary historical heritage.

Papers are accepted in Polish and English in form of scholarly articles, discussions and reviews of publications, reports on scholarly events and biographical notes.

The structure of the journal comprises the following sections:

  1. Editorial.
  2. ‘Konarski Lectures’ series.
  3. The leading theme of the volume.
  4. Studies and materials.
  5. Discussions and reviews.
  6. Scholarly chronicle.
  7. In memoriam.

The Archeion is a peer-reviewed journal (double-blind review procedure). It is open access, which means that all content is freely available to users and institutions, provided that the authors' copyrights are respected.

A new volume of the journal is published at the end of each calendar year.

From volume 120 (for 2019) onwards, the online version of the Archeion is the primary form of the journal. The hardcopy is the secondary version. All papers and other information published in the printed version are identical to the primary version.
