Biography

Renata Bizek-Tatara, Professor in the Department of Romance Studies, in the Institute of Linguistics and Literary Studies at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin (Poland). Her research concerns French-language Belgian literature, contemporary French-language literature, issues of genre hybridization and centre-periphery relations in the context of French-language literatures. She is the author of over 80 scientific publications.

This article is devoted to the ambivalence of medicinal plants in the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, using the examples of the crow’s eye tree and the St. Ignatius bean. The author analyzes descriptions of the properties of alkaloids obtained from them – strychnine and brucine – which, when properly used, can be a disease-curing medicine and an effective lethal poison. She also discusses the sources from which the writer obtained medical and pharmaceutical knowledge about plant toxins, their action and the symptoms they cause.

This article looks at the functions of paratexts in three novels by Belgian-Congolese writer In Koli Jean Bofane: Mathématiques congolaises, Congo Inc. Le Testament de Bismarck and La Belle de Casa. An analysis of the title, the image on the cover, the dedication and the epigraph, that these epigraphs constitute real points of junction and transition with the text: by stating and announcing it, they programme its deciphering and anticipate its reception. They also highlight Africa, the writer’s native land, which plays a major role in his writing.
