https://doi.org/10.4467/23531991KK.17.009.7533The article presents some reflections upon the genesis of Alfred Döblin’s Reise in Polen formulated on the basis of manuscripts and other materials from the writer’s legacy. Among the figures of speech used by Döblin to turn his travel experiences into a literary text are anonymisation of conversations, blurring of the logistic background of the journey and staging orality. The second part of the article includes an analysis of Döblin’s book from the point of view of the presence of an important thematic motif, which is the national question. It discusses the way in which the writer’s views on national independence movements change in the process of writing.

https://doi.org/10.4467/23531991KK.19.002.10657Alfred Döblin and Joseph Roth wrote their texts about Poland and Polish Jews at the same time (1924–1927). Th e article not only compares their works, but also documents that Roth might have felt called upon by Döblin to write essays Th e Wandering Jews. He was indebted to Döblin for giving him the courage to publicly admit his East-Jewish roots and was inspired by his subjective, personal narrative. In several passages he refers to Journey in Poland and enters into dialogue with Döblin.
