It focuses on the philosophical context described in the fi rst chapter of Beata Wojciechowska’s book Flebotomia i purgowanie, czyli o leczeniu w wiekach średnich [Phlebotomy and purging, or about medical treatment in the Middle Ages]. The author briefl y points out the differences between the Epicurean, Stoic, Peripatetic and Academic positions on the nature of the soul, its relation to the body and the universe.

The author focuses on the ancient idea of the unity of body and soul to draw attention to the dependence of medical practices on cultural conditions, using the example of the recipe for headache from Plato’s Charmides and the articles in Medicina, antiqua mediaevalis et moderna.
