Biography

Bartłomiej Gapiński – doktor nauk humanistycznych, historyk, etnolog, bibliotekarz, adiunkt w Bibliotece Jagiellońskiej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie. Zajmuje się historią społeczną Polski, odnosząc się głównie do XIX i XX wieku. Jego zainteresowania bardziej szczegółowe to: historia i antropologia religii, historia i etnografia starości, historia samotności, antropologia historyczna, biografistyka, kultura ludowa, kultury regionalne (Kujawy, Wielkopolska, Małopolska). Autor publikacji naukowych i popularnonaukowych, w tym kilku książek, z których najważniejsze to: Sacrum i codzienność. Prośby o modlitwę nadsyłane do Kalwarii Zebrzydowskiej w latach 1965–1979 (Warszawa 2008), Ludzie starzy na wsi polskiej od schyłku XIX wieku po rok 1939 (Poznań 2014), Karol Wojtyła na tle kultury epoki: lata krakowskie 1938–1978 (Kraków 2022).

Między doświadczeniem wspólnot a samotnością. Interpretacja listownych próśb modlitewnych wysyłanych przez wiernych do Kalwarii Zebrzydowskiej w latach 70. XX wieku

The author analyses epistolary requests for prayers sent in the 1970s to the sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska from the perspective of expressing loneliness and community identification. The article oscillates between historical and ethnological reflection, referring to „monoseology”, a coined term for a philosophical study on loneliness. The author analyses the attitudes of the faithful sending prayer requests to this sanctuary.
The article consists of four parts. In the first one, the history of the sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is presented. In the next part, the author analyses the Kalwaria letters with supplications for prayers as a historical source and attemps to make a general characteristic of them. In the third part, starting from the perspective of the history of solitude and monoseology, the author reflects on the expression of a solitary attitude in correspondence. He concludes by showing to which two fundamental communities the senders refer - namely, the family and the Church (identified in the Polish People’s Republic as a religious-national community).
Loneliness has a negative character in the correspondence, but it also expresses hope and faith in a positive change in life. Communities are perceived in the perspective of danger: the family’s disintegration and the Church’s confrontation with communism.

Starość wiejska z terenów pogranicza kujawsko-wielkopolskiego. Interpretacja międzywojennych świadectw notarialnych gwarantujących „dożywocie”

The paper aims at presenting a specific historical source, namely notarial annuity provisions typically included in sale agreements, but also used in acts of donation and wills. The analyzed source comes from the inter-war period and concerns a village in the Kujawy and Greater Poland borderland (former Prussian territory). In the first part, the author presents the dynamically developing field of history that is history of the elderly. Then, the determinants of the specific character of the elderly in rural areas are described. The next part discusses the concept of old age established in “magical culture” (or “myth”), which is mainly reconstructed by ethnologists and historians of old age. Afterwards, the determinants of annuities during the Prussian occupation are demonstrated. The inter-war period is analyzed based on sample excerpts from annuity agreements, with interpretation of these documents and the way they were implemented in reality. The paper ends with conclusions and a reference to similar documents still being drafted now.
