A flexible approach to the evaluation of the cost effectiveness of investment projects

This article presents basic ideas for flexible design in construction investments through the presentation of methods used for assessing the financial effectiveness of investments. The classification of these methods based on two main factors, time and risk, is shown. The authors propose an algorithm for the analysis of the economic efficiency of projects implemented in a flexible manner.

Flexible designing of a road infrastructure example

The paper presents the idea of flexible design in the construction sector. Guidelines of the evaluation of a road infrastructure were discussed based on JASPERS Blue Book. An idea of how to proceed is presented through infrastructure projects concerned with economic efficiency analysis using a flexible approach. Moreover, the issue of flexibility is presented using the POZNAN BY-PASS A2 as the example of infrastructure, to which efficiency analysis was applied to variant solutions.

Hybrid approach in learning from examples in construction process design

This paper presents options for implementing an advisory system to support production processes in the
construction sector. With case-based reasoning methods (implementation of learning from examples) and simulation, an advisory system can be built on the foundation of a knowledge base, being a systematic collection of information aimed at the advancement of construction processes on site. Based on the evaluation of studied process results acquired in specified conditions (using the abductive approach), options are proposed for new case design engineering. The paper presents an example of application of case-based reasoning in delivering ready-mixed concrete to a large construction site from two batching plants.

Multiphase construction in single family housing. Case study

The dynamic development in the construction industry allows and at the same time forces us to design buildings with the ability to adapt to changing needs. The article discusses the formal aspects and the method of financing a single family house constructed in stages, depending on changing needs. A comparison of costs for a building constructed in stages and traditional building in the Polish realities for different scenarios of changing needs. The paper also presents the literature investigating the issue of the possibility of adapting buildings to changing needs. The basic problem is the risk of a financial trap involving the construction of a large house once and the financial problems resulting from: limitation of user numbers, limitation of financial resources, rising energy prices, high probability of selling a large house at a loss.
