Marek Baran, professor of Hispanic linguistics at the University of Łódź and the University of Gdańsk. Between 2018 and 2022, he served as president of the Polish Association of Hispanists. His main areas of research are sociopragmatics and cross-cultural studies (Emotividad y convención sociopragmática. Propuestas and perspectivas, Almería, 2018 [co-authors: Magdalena Szeflińska-Baran, Francisco García Marcos]) and contrastive grammar (L’adjectif épithète en français, espagnol et polonais – étude contrastive, Łódź, 2018 [co-author: Magdalena Szeflińska-Baran]). Currently, his interests in interactional linguistics are reflected, among other things, in the study of different mechanisms of so-called empathic communication as seen through different communication channels and in different speech communities. Together with researchers from the University of Cádiz, the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, and the University of Minho, he has carried out a project focused on the analysis of reading consumption among adolescents (“A comparative approach from international contexts: the case of Chile, Spain, Poland, and Portugal”).
