Cementation of iron water and sewage pipes is a standard procedure that is used to ensure internal protection against corrosion. In order to reduce leaching of chemical elements from coating to water, the neutral impact of cement coating on the water is of major importance. In the present study, the elemental composition of the cement mortar lining, taken from the new cast iron pipes with a diameter of 100 and 150 mm, has been investigated. A reference sample was made from Portland cement. Studies using scanning electron microscopy revealed an increased contents of titanium in the sewage pipes coating and also aluminum and alkali in water pipe coatings.

https://doi.org/10.4467/2353737XCT.14.283.3371A classic example of the application of electron-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) is the observation of the microstructure of solid samples using scanning electron microscope (SEM). This provides the possibility of taking measurements of chemical composition in very small areas. Measurements can be performed on any bulk sample through adjusting the X-ray excitation parameters to the elements of its expected composition. Examples of the applications of the EDS technique in the context of environmental engineering have been presented.

https://doi.org/10.4467/2353737XCT.16.205.5954Examples of the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to study organic matter in variable vacuum (VP) were presented. The organisms growing in water (e.g. Chironomidae), carried by water/wastewater (e.g. Protozoa, Amoebozoa) or inhabiting reservoirs (e.g. Algae), were investigated. The results indicate a good agreement between the predictions in source literature and the actual imaging quality in our VP-SEM experiments.
