%X The article presents its author’s deliberations regarding the place occupied by research in state archive network concepts professed by particular Directors of the State Archives in the 21st century. The author begins by presenting his understanding of what constitutes research, and analyses e.g. programmes published by state archive directors, assessing their focus on the aforementioned efforts. The author also attempts to provide a general outline of the changes which have occurred this century. The article constitutes an attempt at re-igniting the discussion on conducting research and the place of science in state archives.
