abstract = {The publication reviewed in the article is the first in a series of volumes on cultural heritage. Volume 1 presents the results of a social study focused on how cultural legacy is assessed and treated by Polish society. The starting point for the deliberations included in the report is the definition of cultural heritage, followed by an analysis of the particular components of attitudes towards it, being interested or involved in protecting it. The report also includes the economic aspects of heritage. The study and its results take into account archives and archival materials. Approximately 80% of the respondents acknowledged their significance, implying that they play a very significant role among other means of preserving national heritage. However, the questionnaires used in the study do not provide a complete picture of the certain specific characteristics of archives and archival materials. This is why the archivist community should become directly involved in the future activities of the National Heritage Board and the Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University. },
