Its stated purpose was to “significantly increase the amount of information on the fonds possessed by state archives available online, at least at the archival unit level”. The project is planned to be ready in late 2018. To facilitate work on the project, the efforts were limited to rewriting the aids, without re-analysing the fonds themselves. Transferring data using OCR technologies was also permitted. Thus, the main purpose of the project was to transform all paper finding aids into an electronic form as quickly as possible, using all available technological tools and involving as many employees as possible. Was the programme successful, however? The remarks made during the retroconversion process imply that it might not have been a complete success.
