%X The paper retraces the changes in the XVI–XVII century descriptions of a seemingly exotic creature, since ancient times surrounded by a mythical aura. It shows that, as knowledge was accumulated, the mysterious sea animal gradually came to possess objective physical features to end up as the now well-known remora.
