The aim of this article is to determine the main motives of protectionist practices in contemporary international trade, as well as to identify the desired direction of their development. To achieve this aim the author explained the consequences of the process of globalization for the international environment and analysed the arguments for protectionism, i.e., strategic trade policy and industrial policy. The author studied both Polish and foreign literature and official documents regarding protectionist practices.
