The main problem related to pharmacotherapy in hospitals is real-time access to up-to-date data, which determines the correct treatment process. This paper presents the results of research aimed at forecasting the outcome of implementing e-prescriptions in conjunction with barcode scanning on the time of response to a patient’s needs for pharmacotherapy. The research was conducted in two hospitals by means of a business process analysis and the BPMN 2.0 standard. The analysis was concentrated on the drug administration process, taking into consideration the labour and service times of the process. Special attention was given to evaluating the possibilities of getting real-time access to information regarding the type, location and inventory level of pharmaceutical products. The research proved that implementing e-prescriptions in conjunction with barcode scanning could lead to reductions of the average working and service time.
