Architects, folklorists, geographers, psychologists, sociologists and other scholars study roadside memorials in terms of their appearance, location, importance for people who erected them also seeking factors contributing to their occurance in the contemporary world. The aim of the article is to answer the following question: which factors determine occurance (erection and duration) of roadsied memorials in Poland? Although the article is based mainly on papers previously published, data and interpretation are presented in a new and original way. The structure of the article is the following: after the outline of the world literature on spontaneous memorialization, the author`s model of the occurrance of roadside memorials in Poland has been presented, followed by its selected elements further described in detail in the forthcoming three parts of the paper.
