%X This article concentrates on the methodological problems of researching pleonastic expressions in the contemporary Russian language. Pleonasm is so complex linguistic phenomenon that it requires a comprehensive methodological approach. None of the methods presented in this article (the analysis of dictionary defi nitions, contextual analysis, analysis of the distribution, component analysis and prototype theory, elements of the cognitive approach) is sufficient to explore the complexity of the pleonastic expressions. However, new opportunities of researching pleonasm are offered by corpus linguistics. The empirical material based on corpus allows to check such parameters as the frequency of using pleonastic structures, the preferences for the aspect (verbal pleonasm) and the variance.
