This conflict caused unprecedented cultural losses, and became the starting point for work on solutions aiming at legal protection of cultural heritage. The importance of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict is particularly highlighted. The convention was the first concrete evidence of intensified international cooperation that occurred after the Second World War in the area of cultural property protection.
