AB - The article aims to present Tadeusz Smoleński’s relationship with the Academy of Arts and Sciences, thanks to which he was able to expand his knowledge of ancient Egypt. T. Smoleński studied history and geography at Jagiellonian University. In 1904, doctors diagnosed him with lung disease, which forced him to stop studying and undergo climatotherapy in Egypt. In Cairo, he began studying archaeology and Egyptian philology under the guidance of Gaston Maspero. The difficult financial situation in the land of the pharaohs made him turn to Bolesław Ulanowski, secretary general of the Academy of Arts and Sciences. In the years 1905/1906, 1906/1907, and 1907/1908, T. Smoleński received a scholarship from the Academy of Arts and Sciences of 600 Austrian crowns a year from the bequest of Malwina Jankowska. In 1907 and 1908, he took part in two Austro-Hungarian excavation expeditions in Sharuna and El-Gamhud. Thanks to the young Egyptologist’s participation in the excavation campaigns on the Nile, the Academy of Arts and Sciences received four sarcophagi with mummies from El-Gamhud and two limestone slabs from the Ptolemaic temple in Sharuna.
