This article discusses the relation between modal and temporal changes of the form cantara, and the expansion of the compound tenses created in the Romance verbal system. The paper includes comparison of the situation in three languages of the Iberian Peninsula: Spanish, Galician and Portuguese with special attention to Spanish. In this language, as opposed to Galician and Portuguese, took place the migration of cantara from the indicative to the subjunctive mood. Nevertheless, in some distribution the use and the modal value of the form in -ra is similar in the three languages. Spanish and Portuguese have compound verbal forms, whereas Galician has only simple forms. This fact suggests that there is no direct dependence between the diffusion of the compound tenses and the modal and temporal transformation of the form cantara.

The article examines how Polish observers, writers, and political activists drew symbolic parallels between Spain and Poland, especially during the Spanish Civil War. Both countries were seen as borderlands, situated at the intersection of divergent cultures and religions, and as arenas of conflict between fascism and communism. Polish commentators often depicted Spain’s plight as a harbinger of Poland’s future, stressing fears of threats from Soviet and Nazi forces. The debate on the war’s significance was marked by sharp polarisation and propaganda, with nationalist and Catholic groups in Poland backing the Francoist side and using antisemitic rhetoric. Spain’s war was interpreted not as a mere civil war but as a testing ground for Europe’s looming ideological clash.

The diphthong /ue/ has undergone an evolution in Judeo-Spanish, within a group of words, unknown in Spanish (tuerto ‘one eyed person’ > tugüerto, atuendo ‘pan’ > atgüendo, etc.). We revise the development proposal for this evolution in the first part of this paper. We also examine the results for nuera ‘daughter-in-law’ since it is one that presents more evolutions in Judeo-Spanish and it partly bears out this hypothesis. The main contribution of this study is the analysis of a possible variant of nuera, nuguera, which has been ignored so far due to a different interpretation of its meaning. Here we detail how nuguera is likely an initial development of nuera that it is clearly in line with the expected evolution of this word.

Andrzej Wajda planned to make a film about the Spanish Civil War based on the novel L’Espoir by André Malraux (1937) which Jorge Semprún was to adapt for him. The film was never made. The screenplay L’Espoir (dated August 1980) was displayed at the exposition Jorge Semprún. The large voyage in Spain (2024). Wajda’s Notesy (2024) and Semprún’s Montand, ou la vie continue (1983) make possible recreate the circumstances of their collaboration and query why the film project on the Spanish Civil War – by the Polish director and the Spanish screenwriter, who wrote in French – was not completed.

This study constitutes an approach to the scope of the phatic function in the communication of the digital social networks. Attending to three levels of analysis, namely, the control of the conversational flow, the contact call and the backchannel reactions, it is shown that the manifestations of the phatic function in communication mediated by digital supports contribute significantly to the construction of the interpersonal relationship. Although sometimes the communicative chain is broken, the interlocutors, through various textual-interactional mechanisms, some of them specific to cyberspeech, successfully manage the contact, complying with the generic principle of interlocutive reciprocity.

This paper examines the role of general nouns functioning as encapsulators in two journalistic subgenres: news and sports. Nominal encapsulators are cohesive markers used in specialized languages to condense textual sequences, enabling evaluation or recategorization of content and imposing a subjective interpretation on the reader. Our corpus-based study explores the distribution of lexical-semantic classes of encapsulators in recent press articles, following Schmid’s taxonomy (2000) and later research. The main goal is to test whether the informational profile of news journalism corresponds to factual cohesive markers. The study also highlights differences between news and sports articles. Finally, the quantitative results are compared with findings on nominal encapsulation in other specialized discourses.

After a brief introduction to the life and work of Concepción Saiz, this paper analyses the report entitled La enseñanza de la lengua materna (= The Teaching of the Mother Tongue), published in 1909 by this Galician teacher, a great defender of the right of women to equal education. This report was the result of her study trip to London in 1908, financed by the “Junta para Ampliación de Estudios” (“Board for the Extension of Studies”), with the aim of visiting a series of schools in that city and trying to use what she had learned to modernise the methods of teaching the Spanish language in Spain.

This paper deals with the tradition of documentary poetry, or docupoetry, initiated among others by Muriel Rukeyser in the United States, and its connection to some of the immediate questions that have received increasing attention in current literary studies. These include issues of the archive (Foucault, Derrida), the history and the memory (Benjamin, Ricoeur, Nora, Bal), and the regimes of historicity (Hartog). All this is applied to contemporary Galician poetry and the convergence of the poem with photography. Particular attention is paid to the work of Emilio Araúxo, Margarita Ledo and Luísa Villalta.

This paper examines various aspects of historical variation in general Spanish, especially some cases of grammatical simplification found in American variants of the language. Koinization theory predicts that languages with colonial expansion exhibit a strong tendency toward leveling. It is shown here how, as many morphological redundancies and complex construction patterns disappear, redundancy decreases, and numerous phenomena of grammatical overcharacterization occur to compensate for this loss.

This article examines the works of Colombian author Juan Gabriel Vásquez, focusing on his use of archives and materiality to address memory, history, and identity. His novels and essays highlight distortion, uncertainty, and enquiry, presenting history as subjective and fragmented. While rooted in Colombian and Latin American traditions, his writing departs from conventional fiction by integrating autobiographical elements and engaging historical realities. The analysis underscores Vásquez’s intimate relation to the past, where objects and landscapes shape his storytelling. The heterogeneity of his archives, from textual to material, reveals history’s dynamic, negotiable, and metafictional dimensions.

Given its nature as an instrument of communication, a functional study of language requires to consider all the factors that make up the syntactic structure of the message. The principle of economy leads to saving elements that the speaker deduces from the context or culture. The principle of cost-effectiveness leads to making the best use of available resources. This paper will deal with some specific cases where these principles condition the final character of the message. In particular, it will deal with internal constituents, omitted in the expression of the message but present in it, constituents which, as such, have not been regularly considered.

This article stems from an interest in the pragmatic-discursive role played by interjections in affirmative expressions. Specifically, the analysis focuses on the combination of ay with the affirmative adverb , used in different communicative situations. Based on a corpus compiled from the CORPES XXI database, the different pragmatic values of this structure are examined, both at the discursive and social levels.

This article analyzes the marked features that allow for the identification of the main dialectal varieties of Spanish, taking into account their linguistic, social, and symbolic value. From an integrative perspective, it examines phonetic, grammatical, and lexical phenomena across different geolectal areas, considering criteria such as exclusivity, intensity, and contrast. These features, rather than being mere particularisms, function as identity markers in contexts of prestige, stigmatization, or cultural affirmation.

This article is the continuation of the morpho-syntactical analysis of the work Libro de guisados, manjares y potages. Intitulado libro de cozina by a Catalan chef of the 16th century, Robert Nola. The 1549 edition is part of a little-known collection of the Jagellonian Library that has not yet been studied in depth. In this study, after a brief approach to culinary linguistics and the work itself, we focus on verbal inflection and the syntactical construction of the text. With all this, we intend to encourage hispanists to investigate this invaluable collection and, following the guidelines of culinary linguistics, present the cookbook as a basis for linguistic studies.

This article aims to show the two processes of the genesis, lato sensu, of “Això és la joia” by Màrius Torres. The first outlines the path along which the poet lays the stones of the construction of his own reflections, the germ of ideas and feelings (such as pain, melancholy, joy), in anticipation of an explosion towards the outside, of a determined literary materialization. The second process is constituted by the material genesis of the poem, when, after the impact caused by “Das ist die Sehnsucht” by Rilke, he elaborates a first version of the text which, thanks to a commentary by Joan Sales, he reworks and turns, in a second version, into this little gem of 20th-century Catalan poetry.

The aim of this study is to analyze the apology strategies in Pre-Renaissance Spanish. The analysis will be based on linguistic material from La Celestina, attributed to Fernando de Rojas. Traditional rules of decorum are not respected there as there is no correlation between the characters’ way of being and their social status. Hence, it is the communicative situation that determines the sociolectal variation of the protagonists. It can therefore be assumed that the same principle will apply to the performance of this expressive speech of act. Given these premises, the paper will attempt to demonstrate which strategies predominate and in which communicative situations they are present.
