Dr hab. Maciej Mikuła

Bio

Dr. Hab. Maciej Mikuła is an Assistant Professor (adjunct) at the Department of Church Law and Law on Religious Denominations. He graduated in law from the Jagiellonian University in 2007, and in history from the University’s Faculty of History in 2008. He defended his doctoral thesis in 2012; an abridged version of it was published under the title “Royal and Parliamentary Legislation for the Royal Cities in Małopolska (1386-1572): A Study in the Rule of Law in Poland”. He received his habilitation in 2018 (monograph: Municipal Magdeburg Law (Ius municipale Magdeburgense) in Poland 14th – Early 16th Century: A Study in the Evolution and Adaptation of Law). His research interests include the history of German law (especially Magdeburg law) in Central and Eastern Europe; sources of medieval law; editing of historic legal texts; Polish criminal law of the interwar period; and guarantees of religious freedom in Poland, the European Union, and the United States. He is involved (as head, coordinator, or researcher) in nine major research projects financed by the International Visegrad Fund, the National Centre of Science, and the National Programme for the Development of the Humanities. He is assistant editor of “Cracow Studies of Constitutional and Legal History”, a member of the Polish Association of Church-State Law, a member of the American Society for Legal History, a member the Historische Kommission für Schlesien, and a member of the Cities Commission in the Commitee of Historical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is the project manager of "IURA. Sources of Laws from the Past” (www.iura.uj.edu.pl). He has presented his research at several dozen scientific conferences in Poland and abroad including at Cambridge, Edinburgh, Frankfurt am Main, Leeds, Leipzig, Loket, Lviv, Magdeburg, Paris, Szeged, Toulouse, Vienna, and Vilnius. He has delivered lectures in Bielefeld, Göttingen, and Giessen. In the summer semester of the 2015/2016 academic year, he conducted a course for PhD students of the Faculty of Law in Szeged (Hungary), entitled "State, Religion, and Law in the 19th-20th Centuries". In 2017, he had a six-month scholarship at the Max-Planck Institut für Europäische Rechtsgeschichte in Frankfurt am Main. He was the winner of the Scholarship of the Minister of Science and Higher Education for Outstanding Young Scholars.  He received 2nd prize for his book “Municipal Magdeburg Law” in the S.K. Kuczyński Competition, organized by the editorial board of "Studia Źródłoznawcze".
