Benedykt z Koźmina, Epitalamium na ślub Joachima Hohenzollerna i Jadwigi Jagiellonki (1535)
The paper presents the Polish translation of a Latin epithalamium composed by Benedykt of Koźmin (Cosminensis, 1497–1559), professor of the Krakow University, for the wedding of the princess Jadwiga Jagiellon (1513–1573) and Joachim Hector Hohenzollern (1505–1571), duke of Brandenburg (1535). Virgilian and Ovidian sources of this poem are described in the commentary. The Renaissance humanist poet employs topoi of epic epithalamium (intervention of gods, praise of groom and bride, description of the wedding feast, best wishes for the newlyweds), and depict the wedding celebrations at the royal court in Krakow in 1535 through imitating the phraseology and figures invented by the Roman poets. Interestingly, Benedykt also intends to praise numerous virtues of Sigismund I the Old (r. 1506–1548).
