How Can Christaller’s Central Place Ideas Still Be Useful for Spatial Planning Challenges in Poland and Remain so in Germany?

Abstrakt

Walter Christaller’s Central Place Theory (cpt) remains influential in regional studies and planning, providing a framework for optimizing settlement structures through an interconnected network of towns. The theory uses a socio-economic logic of differentiated central functions and provision of services to explain the spatial distribution and hierarchy of settlements. This paper compares two research approaches rooted in christaller’s ideas: a desk-based institutional and monitoring analysis of established central-place planning in germany, and a unified empirical assessment of functional urban hierarchy recently developed for poland. It evaluates how far these approaches remain analytically and operationally useful for polycentric planning and territorial justice, and what this implies for transferability to other national contexts. The findings reveal that while the formal logic of cpt continues to inform national and regional planning strategies, its practical implementation is uneven. In germany, the model is widely institutionalised but subject to increasing reinterpretation. In poland, recent empirical efforts show promise for harmonised application but face regional benchmarking distortions. The results underscore the relevance of cpt as a diagnostic tool, especially for identifying gaps in functional hierarchies and supporting tailored interventions for medium-sized cities under pressure from metropolisation.
