Zunde RaMambo – transformacje tradycyjnej instytucji pomocowej we współczesnym Zimbabwe
Zunde raMambo – known as the “Chief ’s Granary” – traditionally served as a grassroots social protection institution, providing food security, fostering community ties and promoting collective responsibility in times of crisis such as drought or flood. However, the advent of modern state structures in Rhodesia and later Zimbabwe shifted authority from local chiefs to state administrators, undermining long-standing social ties. This transition undermined the influence of the chiefs and weakened institutions such as Zunde RaMambo, eventually leading to its decline. Recent government efforts to revive the institution have been unsuccessful, as local communities have already adopted new support mechanisms. Corruption and inequitable distribution of government resources by certain chiefs further undermines public trust in their leadership and hinders genuine restoration. In addition, social ties within local communities have loosened as families now tend to focus on their own welfare. Without strong community engagement or trusted local leadership, Zunde RaMambo will struggle to regain its former prominence.
