The article is a sketch summarizing over sixty years of public activity of the Jagiellonian University Museum. The Jagiellonian University Museum – established in 1947 – opened to the public in the jubilee year of the University in 1964, and traces its roots to the activity of the Jagiellonian University Archaeological Cabinet, one of the oldest teaching “tools” at the university. For several decades, it has consistently based its activity on the concept of the outstanding but also extraordinary Karol Estreicher Jr. The author cites the most important moments throughout museum’s history of operation, but also refers to the essence of the organization and practice of the institution, which today is still the largest among the Polish academic museums and the only one among museum institutions covered by the register of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
