The primary function of a postage stamp is to certify payment for postage; however, stamps often serve additional purposes, including disseminating the information or ideas communicated in their graphic design. Recognizing their significant propaganda potential, states and international organizations – the exclusive issuers of stamps – have long used stamps to convey health messages. This article aims to describe the role of postage stamps in health communication, exemplified by an analysis of the iconography of polio stamps in the Gwen Prout philatelic collection (Wellcome Collection, London). The primary visual tropes employed by this medium are identified, with particular emphasis on the visual rhetoric used to represent disability.
