Zjawisko camera obscura w Dioptryce Kartezjusza
Camera obscura is an optical phenomenon involving the projection of an inverted image of an object in a dark interior. The ‘dark room’ phenomenon was known in Descartes’s time, thanks to earlier research by medieval scholars and the practice of Renaissance artists. In his essay Dioptrics, included in the first edition of Discourse on Method, published in 1637, the French philosopher connects this phenomenon with the theory of vision and the structure of the eye. In this context, the camera obscura serves not only as a phenomenon but also as a device, a tool that aids in explaining the workings of the eye. Descartes postulates that the eye, like a ‘dark room’, focuses light rays through a lens, creating an inverted image on the retina. However, in everyday life, we perceive objects in their correct orientation. This is explained by the fact that the next stage of image processing takes place in the brain, at a central point, the pineal gland, where the mind interprets the received signals, assigns meaning to them, and integrates them with existing knowledge of the surrounding reality. In this way, perception is not a passive reception of stimuli, but an active interpretative process that enables a coherent and accurate perception of reality.
