Kobiety w Polskim słowniku biograficznym – wybrane problemy z perspektywy dziewięćdziesięciu lat wydawnictwa
Published in Krakow since 1935, the Polish Biographical Dictionary (PSB) is a classic biographical dictionary, presenting the nation’s history through the prism of individual lives. Aspiring to be a ‘national biography’, PSB – like similar publications of this kind – faces questions about its ability to represent society as a whole, not only in terms of social composition but also gender. In PSB, women’s biographies constitute only 6% of its over 28,000 entries. While this proportion is generally consistent with other comparable publications worldwide, it is difficult to consider this result as fully satisfactory. The aim of this article is both to discuss the reasons for this imbalance and to quantitatively and qualitatively characterize women’s biographies in the context of the Dictionary’s publishing principles. The analysis encompassed 54 volumes of PSB, published between 1935 and 2024, comprising a total of 225 issues. By addressing the selection of individuals (the ‘list of entries’) chronologically and by subject (the issue of ‘representativeness’), the structure of the entries (the ‘canon of the PSB biography’), and the language of the narrative (feminatives), the author not only considers the reasons for the limited presence of women’s biographies in ‘national’ biographical dictionaries but also highlights the most important problems faced by such ongoing lexicographic publications. Without overlooking the stereotyping of femininity, female nature, and the roles of mother and wife found in the initial volumes, the author demonstrates the historiographical achievements of the Polish Biographical Dictionary, which were accomplished long before the development of systematic studies on women.
