Evaluation of the quality of 52 health-related websites, created with wiki technology

The emergence of Web 2.0 philosophy of using Internet as a platform generated by all Internet users could have many implications for the future of healthcare. While application of the Web 2.0 tools, such as wikis, blogs, podcast and social networks to medicine and healthcare has definitely many benefits (e.g. to develop communication in healthcare and education), there is a growing concern about the quality of the sources of information built using these tools. According to general philosophy of the web 2.0 every Internet user could be the author of Internet’s content. Such a practice could be especially dangerous in case of sources of health related information, where the reliability and accuracy are especially crucial, because there is to much risk to harm the patient if inaccurate and misleading information was posted. The aim of the following study was to assess the quality of the sources of information, built with wiki technology (which is one of the web 2.0 applications).

Introduction. Assessment of the information needs of patients and their family caregivers is considered as the foundation from which to develop patient-centred services. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the studies published in a last 5 years on family caregivers’ health information needs in order to find out if there is any standard method to perform information needs assessment in the area of healthcare.

Methods. Search of the literature from the last five years was conducted using Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, Academic Search Premier, ERIC, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, LISTA and Polska Bibliografia Lekarska yielding 2869 articles. Of these, 79 studies were included in the review.

Results. Most included studies (33 + 4) used a qualitative or mixed design; there were no observational or experimental research included into review. In three studies existing theory was tested and only one study was of methodological character. Only four included studies used a longitudinal design. The sample population in qualitative studies usually is not representative, what does not allow generalization.

Conclusion. Systematic review of research into family caregivers’ health information needs confirms that within the field of health information needs research there is neither prevailing method to assess them, nor established theoretical background (concepts, standard terminology, dominating models).

A diagnosis of autism can present a great challenge to the family with autistic children, especially to parents. Health information-seeking behaviour is described as one of many problem-solving and stress-coping strategies in literature. The information was found to have many important functions, e.g. it can contribute to the process of acceptance, it enables parents to access health care services, then to manage their child’s difficult behaviour and it might help parents to respond more effectively to the range of life-changing events that may induce stress.

There are many barriers to meeting the information needs of parents having autistic children. Two different types of barriers to information access can be identified: “objective barriers” (problems communicating with health care professionals, healthcare professionals lack of skills and knowledge of managing children with autism, economic barriers to the access of information, information overload and a low level of health literacy) and “subjective barriers” (experience of social isolation and the parents’ emotional state during diagnosis, which have the potential to make the families prone to misinformation).The main aim of this paper is to describe the negative consequences of barriers to the access of scientific research and evidence-based healthcare information (e.g.: spreading anti-vaccine messages). The problem will be discussed using the example of the information-seeking and health-related behaviour of parents with autistic children.
